GEBRUDER MONNIG ALTO FLUTE

Closed-hole flute in stunning condition (#17838)

Gebrüder Mönnig have been making woodwind instruments for over 100 years in Germany and their work is of the highest quality using precision handmade craftsmanship. They are based in Markneukirchen, which is the home of many famous instrument makers in Germany.

The alto flute, unlike the flute in C, is known for its mellow tone and lower notes, and it actually plays a fourth lower than the regular flute (which is half an octave). It gives a beautiful deep sound and adds depth and tone to the flute section. Another difference between the alto flute and the regular flute, is that the tube on an alto flute is thicker than that of the flute in C, and is longer too. This means the player needs more breath control, which can take practice and time to master.  Alto flutes play in G and the fingering is the same primarily as a C flute playing a perfect fourth below.

This particular flute is a fine example and it is a beautifully constructed flute with very heavy silver plating. Solidly built with excellent mechanism and a straight head this flute plays beautifully and freely with a lush rich tonal quality. We have serviced the flute and the pads are excellent with plenty of life and seated well.

BEAUTIFUL AND RARE HANS REINER HANDMADE GRENADILLA WOOD PICCOLO (#120)

Here is a rare opportunity to purchase a used piccolo from the legendary Hans Reiner.

Schöneck is a village near Markneukirchen southwest of Dresden in the heart of East Germany's historic instrument making region.  Hans Reiner learned flute making from his father Anton, who worked in the Philip Hammig shop. Hans completed his apprenticeship and worked with excellent craftsmen at the Gebr. Mönnig and Phillip Hammig firms.  He became a master flutemaker in 1936, set up his own shop and his piccolos are some of the most sought-after in the world.

This particular piccolo is number 120 and I am not sure of the exact age but it would of course be an earlier model. The pitch is in C and it has a split E mechanism. Notes are beautiful and clear and the unique embouchure cut allows an immediate response. The quality is quite simply superb and we have stripped the piccolo and fully overhauled with new pads and cork. The mechanism has been cleaned, oiled and adjusted and there are no cracks. RARE LOUIS LOT SOLID SILVER CLOSED-HOLE FLUTE WITH C-FOOT (#9660)

Stunning and rare Louis Lot from the last era (Strasser-Marigaux-Lemaire). The Louis Lot company was started in the latter part of the 19th century producing a flute with a seamed tube. His work was highly regarded and has been copied by other main flute makers such as Haynes and Altus over the years.

The Louis Lot company continued after Louis Lot's death and changed hands a number of times before finally being purchased in 1951 by Strasser-Marigaux-Lemaire (SML). SML were known for producing high quality wind instruments and there are a number of flutes produced under the Louis Lot name, mainly plated but some very fine examples. As the serial numbers were changed when SML purchased the Louis Lot company, they run in line with SML serial numbers and not the old LL records. I believe this particular flute to have been made around the 1960's approximately.

This particular flute is a fine example and it is solid silver as it is hallmarked with the French crab sign and also with the SML logo which is the French hallmark guarantee after 1938. It has been marked on the strap as solid silver although we believe that this was a later addition. We have completely overhauled the body but kept the pads as they are seated and in good used condition. It is not a seamed tube as SML dispensed with this method but arguable the mechanism is more solid than the vintage LL flutes and it plays very nicely and to 440hz pitch without having been re-tuned. This is a superb opportunity to obtain a flute from one of the greatest flute makers, in beautiful playing condition and at an extremely reasonable price.

GEMEINHARDT 4S SOLID STERLING SILVER PICCOLO - LOVELY SOUND

Here is a superb opportunity to purchase a used Gemeinhardt solid silver intermediate piccolo. Gemeinhardt are a superb company based in Elkart, Indiana, with a history that dates back to 1928 and they have been producing quality instruments ever since.

The Gemeinhardt 4S piccolo is crafted from solid sterling silver and has the advantage of a raised lip and raised hand support. This is ideal for students progressing from flute to piccolo as it will help their embouchure to adjust. Solid silver gives a clear ringing sound and more warmth than the plastic Yamaha models or silver plated equivalents.

This particular piccolo has been completely stripped down and new pads and corks have been added. Condition is good with some scratches on the silver and small dings, but it has no damage to the mechanism and plays very nicely.   Because of the scratches I am pricing this very well and these scratches can later be taken out by a repairer should this be preferred.
