EDWARD ALMEIDA #459 HANDMADE SOLID SILVER OPEN-HOLED HANDMADE FLUTE WITH SOLDERED TONE HOLES AND B-FOOT

Edward Almeida has been making flutes since 1948, when he first apprenticed with Verne Q. Powell. In 1960 he was invited to become a part owner of the company, and was responsible for a number of significant innovations in flute making techniques which have since become standards in the industry. The Almeida Flute was introduced in 1969. By combining precision tooling and meticulous craftsmanship, Almeida ensured an accurately fitted and tuned instrument of consistently very high quality. Almeida flutes have a well deserved reputation for their lasting quality and for the consistently reliable sound preferred by discriminating performers worldwide. They are extremely coveted and very hard to find on the used market.

This particular flute is in beautiful original condition and has been recently stripped, cleaned and adjusted. It offers the inline G, soldered tone holes and the sought-after B-Foot. These flutes are sought-after mainly for the construction and superb mechanism but this particular flute also blows very well. It is a very rare model and a collector's dream and is ready to play. Please note that personal opinion on restoration and adjustment on these vintage instruments may mean that you will wish to carry out your own servicing. We have serviced this flute and it leaves our workshop in playing condition. These vintage instruments are fragile however and it may need further adjustment on arrival and so we stress this. We have tested the flute with an electronic tuner and it plays comfortably at 440hz. Rarely, this flute comes with a double flute case, as it was originally paired with a Louis Lot owned by the same person. I have seen a few Almeida's in my time and this is by far the nicest example and the best sounding. PLEASE NOTE that I will consider part-exchange with certain flutes, please contact me for further details

''SUPERB ADVANCED UPGRADE FLUTE''

For students looking to move up to a flute that will take them through Grade 8 and beyond, it is important firstly to benefit from solid silver and the richness of tone it offers. Advanced students will also be looking to move to open-holes and an inline mechanism allows for better hand positioning.

The Yamaha 581 is a perfect upgrade for advanced students. It features an upgraded Type 4 mechanism, pointed key arms, solid silver body and footjoint which gives a lovely warm sound and allows a student a much greater range of tonal colour . It also features the open-holes, inline G that is necessary to advance to and this particular flute has the added bonus of the B-Foot allowing an extra note in the scale and increased depth of sound. This is an excellent semi-professional model that will last a lifetime.

This particular flute is offered in beautiful condition with no scratches or dents, fully overhauled with new pads/corks and comes ready to play. Should you need advice and assistance on suitability then please contact me and I will be glad to help, I am an experienced flautist with over 15 years experience providing flutes to players around the globe.

**NOTE REGARDING INLINE G AND B-FOOT - This set-up is for those students who do not have small hands and a good finger stretch. The inline G is only a half an inch difference in hand positioning for the left handbut for young players or those with short finger stretch it may not suit. Likewise the B-Foot requires a good stretch between the little finger and adjoining finger in the right hand. Adults and the majority of teenagers should have no difficulty and this is an advisable change - The offset G is there to specifically help with smaller hands and can promote lazy posture in those that do not require this help. Feel free to contact me via above or via my web page LONDON FLUTES on Google.

BEAUTIFUL HANDMADE EWEN MCDOUGALL (No.17) SOLID STERLING SILVER OPEN-HOLE FLUTE BODY

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a superb flute from an iconic British maker. Originally a craftsman with Rudall Carte and then a founder member of the Flutemakers Guild in 1961, Ewen McDougall went on to make his own flutes and is one of the most sought-after British flute makers of the 20th century.

This particular flute is hallmarked to 1992 and was no.17. The craftsmanship is beautiful and the body has been monogrammed with Ewen's initials on the footjoint. It comes without a headjoint and therefore is an ideal opportunity for a player to fit their own bespoke head to this beautiful flute. It is open-holed with soldered tone holes, inline G and C-foot.

We have completely overhauled and repadded the flute and tested it with another headjoint and it is ready to go. These flutes are rare and coveted and this is the first that I have had in 15 years.

BEAUTIFUL HAND-CRAFTED VERNE POWELL 14K AURUMITE BOSTON FLUTE IN BEAUTIFUL, FULLY SERVICED CONDITION (STUNNING SOUND).

Verne Powell first started making flutes in 1927 and the Powell company are world renowned flute makers to this day. This particular flute is the very sought-after 14K Aurumite Boston model. Through a patented fusion process, Powell produces flute tubing made of interlocking layers of gold and silver. Known as Aurumite, this material combines the projection of silver with the warmth of gold. Aurumite 14k flutes have the sterling silver showing on the exterior of the tubing, and the 14K Rose Gold showing on the interior and the keys are solid sterling silver also. The difference in sound is quite astounding as it has all the rich tonal quality given through the solid silver with the lush, warm sweet sound that gold offers. The wall thickness is 0.16'', tone-holes are soldered, the mechanism is pinless with white gold springs.

This particular flute is in beautiful condition. It has open-holes, inline G and C-Foot with a beautifully engraved lip on the headjoint (Cut tba) and has been completely stripped down and carefully overhauled. It has the benefit of a G disc inserted (see photos) which acts in place of a split E mechanism, reducing the tone hole and there the making the pitch easier when playing onto the top E. The pads are used and are pure gold pads. Pure gold pads have an extremely thin layer of gold added to the surface and are said to be reflective and resonant. Many flute players say that the pure gold pads sound better than any other pad. Articulation is crisp and clean and the style produces a deep, rich tone with a broad dynamic range.

The current 14K Aurumite model retails at £16,500. The original case is included and is in excellent condition and works perfectly.

No.1 FLUTEMAKERS GUILD (1961) EWEN MCDOUGALL SOLID STERLING SILVER CLOSED-HOLE FLUTE

This is a golden opportunity to acquire the very first flute made by this iconic British maker. The Flutemakers Guild in London was started in 1961, following the breakaway of seven craftsman from the famous flute makers Rudall Carte & Co. These craftsman specialised initially in handmade wooden then silver flutes and have since individually become some of the most respected British flute makers, their work extremely sought-after.

This beautiful flute recently came to me from an estate clearance. On closer examination it was seen not to have a standard serial number, just the number '1' in FMG engraved script. I checked the date via hallmark records and it is dated for the year 1961. After consultation with a gentleman who holds the early FMG records, we have confirmed that this is indeed the very first FMG silver flute ever made. It was made by Ewen Mcdougall in 1961 with 0.18 tubing, pitched to A-442 and was sold by the Flutemakers Guild to a Mrs Chawmer in that same year. We have also checked both the wall thickness and pitch and they both match the details.  The soldered tone holes are deeper than those of the models made in the following years and the flute is beautifully constructed.

This is an extremely rare find and should be treasured. I hope that it finds the right home now that it has been rescued and given a new lease of life. I have priced very reasonably in my view for a flute that cannot be replaced. We have completely stripped the mechanism, cleaned and oiled the rods, adjusted the springs, cleaned the cups and painstakingly re-padded and re-corked the flute. The body has been buffed and polished and is in stunning condition. There are no dents, no scratches and the flute itself plays surprisingly well for one of this age. The added benefit is that it also plays to A-442. The case is not original but I have the old case in which it arrived. The older case is from the right time period I would say but it is not marked Flutemakers Guild and so I was not convinced that it was the correct case either and this is why I replaced it. I can forward photos of this to any potential buyer.

MIYAZAWA PCM SOLID SILVER/COPPER MIX CLOSED-HOLE FLUTE WITH MZ-3B HEADJOINT, OFFSET G, SPLIT E AND C-FOOT

Up for sale is a rare model to the European market. After lengthy experimentation and research, Miyazawa created some years ago the PCM silver alloy. This alloy contains silver, copper and other precious metals. PCM silver was developed from a desire to produce a material with a density greater than nickel silver and a hardness greater than sterling silver. Such a combination results in a material with a tonal range more colorful than nickel silver and with a response faster than sterling silver.

This is a superbly constructed handmade model with Miyazawa's very popular MZ-3B headjoint cut. The Miyazawa 3B Head Joint works best for the flute player with a relaxed embouchure. It has excellent projection and an abundance of overtones - an exciting head joint to play. The combination of this with the superb density of the PCM mix makes this an excellent intermediate/semi-professional model and perfect for the advancing student.

This particular flute is in beautiful condition with no marks. It is offered with recent pads that are well seated, it has been fully serviced and cleaned and comes with the Miyazawa hardcase and soft NAP carrycase (some marks).

BEAUTIFUL HANDMADE FLUTEMAKERS GUILD (#111) (David Keen) SOLID STERLING SILVER CLOSED-HOLE FLUTE

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a superb flute from an iconic British maker.

This particular flute was handmade by one of the founding craftsmen, David Keen in 1966. It has been restored and fully repadded and overhauled and is in stunning condition.  It is closed holed with soldered tone holes, offset G, French pointed key arms and C footjoint. There are no dents, no scratches and the flute is beautiful throughout. It unfortunately does not come with the original case and is presently stored in a Yamaha hardcase. Generic replacement cases of all standards and designs can be found online relatively inexpensively and so I have not replaced this at present.

BEAUTIFUL AND RARE HANS REINER HANDMADE GRENADILLA WOOD PICCOLO (#120)

Here is a rare opportunity to purchase a used piccolo from the legendary Hans Reiner.

Schöneck is a village near Markneukirchen southwest of Dresden in the heart of East Germany's historic instrument making region.  Hans Reiner learned flute making from his father Anton, who worked in the Philip Hammig shop. Hans completed his apprenticeship and worked with excellent craftsmen at the Gebr. Mönnig and Phillip Hammig firms.  He became a master flutemaker in 1936, set up his own shop and his piccolos are some of the most sought-after in the world.

This particular piccolo is number 120 and I am not sure of the exact age but it would of course be an earlier model. The pitch is in C and it has a split E mechanism. Notes are beautiful and clear and the unique embouchure cut allows an immediate response. The quality is quite simply superb and we have stripped the piccolo and fully overhauled with new pads and cork. The mechanism has been cleaned, oiled and adjusted and there are no cracks. The wood is in excellent condition and overall this is a beautiful example.

BEAUTIFUL HANDMADE FLUTEMAKERS GUILD (#121) SOLID STERLING SILVER CLOSED-HOLE FLUTE

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a superb flute from an iconic British maker.

This is a beautiful and rare flute and finding a Flutemakers guild flute with a solid gold head and two footjoints is very unusual. It is closed holed with a 14K solid gold lip and riser, soldered tone holes, offset G, French pointed key arms B and C footjoints. There are no dents, no scratches and the mechanism has been serviced and adjusted. The pads have plenty of life in them and the headjoint plays beautifully with the gold adding an extra sweetness to the sound. The age is estimated to be in the late 1960's. It comes with what looks to be the original case and a carry case which is dated of course but adds protection so I have included it.

Currently this flute resides with my repairer in Manchester and can be tried there. If this is not possible I allow any purchaser one week to fully test the flute after purchase. Should the flute not be suitable then I will refund in full (minus postage costs). I have no interest in any player having a flute that is not right for them and so I will always offer this refund on any flute purchased.

VERNE POWELL 14K AURUMITE (GOLD/SILVER) BOSTON 2100 FLUTE HEADJOINT WITH 14K GOLD LIP, RISER AND CROWN IN BEAUTIFUL, CONDITION (STUNNING SOUND).

Verne Powell first started making flutes in 1927 and the Powell company are world renowned flute makers to this day. This particular flute head is the very sought-after 9K Aurumite 2100 Boston model. Through a patented fusion process, Powell produces flute tubing made of interlocking layers of gold and silver. Known as Aurumite, this material combines the projection of silver with the warmth of gold.

This head has the sterling silver showing on the exterior of the tubing, a 14K solid gold lip, riser and crown. The difference in sound is quite astounding as it has all the rich tonal quality given through the solid silver with the lush, warm sweet sound that gold offers. I believe that this particular head has the Boston cut.

The 2100 and the 3100 models (Now the Signature series) were available with gold, silver and Aurumite options and initially Aurumite was only offered in 14K with the gold option internally for better sound. Powell changed this later and on the 9K 3100 flute models put the gold on the outside. The opinion seems to be that this was for cosmetic reasons, so that it looked gold throughout, but the sound is not rich on those models where the gold layer is facing out.

This particular head has been refurbished to beautiful showroom condition and has not been resized so far so is ready to be adjusted to your particular flute. These rarely come on the market and so this is a superb find and current retail is £3,675 with this specification. I have priced to sell and so it is first come first served and please see discount option below and contact me for more details.

JUAN ARISTA HANDMADE OPEN-HOLE FLUTE (14K GOLD RISER) (#420) WITH INLINE G AND B-FOOT IN PRISTINE CONDITION.

Over thirty years ago the Arista family established a small flute-making workshop in Boston, Massachusetts. In time, the brothers entered into the craft, each having mastered all aspects of mechanical fabrication and aesthetic detail. Flute virtuoso William Bennett and his friends Adrian Brett, Richard and Chris Taylor introduced critical refinements to the Arista instrument that make this flute unsurpassed in craftsmanship and tonal quality. It is an instrument that, in the words of Mr Bennett, ''embodies that mysterious something that only a few French flutes have.'' Arista have become, in a relatively short period of time, one of the world's most coveted flute makers and are celebrated for there craftsmanship and quality of sound.

This particular flute was constructed in 2002, is pitched at 442hz and is in absolutely beautiful unmarked condition. It is open-holed with soldered tone holes, inline G and B-Foot with gizmo key. The head is the L2 cut which has a perfect combination of strength, beauty and colour, enhanced by a 14K gold riser, an expensive upgrade.  This is a superb opportunity for someone to gain an immaculate example at a fraction of the price.

Rare Albert Cooper 9K Solid Gold Headjoint (1983) - Beautiful Condition

Up for sale is a very rare and beautiful headjoint made by probably one of the most sought-after and iconic flute craftsman of the 20th century. Albert Cooper was a British maker who, upon leaving Rudall Carte in the 1960's he set up shop in the shed at the end of his garden and with traditional tools became one of the world's most famous makers of headjoints and flutes. His cooperation with Brannen Brothers and William Bennett developed the 'Cooper Scale' to which Brannen now produce Brannen-Cooper flutes. He passed away in 2011 and left a legacy of beautifully constructed instruments but mainly headjoints and these are highly coveted and very rarely on the market. The solid gold heads are extremely rare.

This particular head has come from a professional flautist's estate and was sold to me by her niece. It was purchased from new in 1983 and was fitted to a gold plated Muramatsu ST (to be marketed shortly). This would easily therefore be adjusted to fit the larger diameter flutes but might need a larger adjustment for the smaller diameter ones. It came to us with a couple of dings and some light scratches and these have been invisibly taken out and the tube is now immaculate. I played this on the Muramatsu and it has a beautifully warm and sweet sound with excellent resistance, it is quite simply a classy headjoint and a piece of history also.

MATEKI M0-062 WATANABE HANDMADE SOLID SILVER FLUTE WITH 14K GOLD RISER, CLOSED-HOLES, OFFSET G AND C-FOOT

This is an excellent opportunity to purchase a beautiful handmade flute by the highly regarded Mateki company.

Mateki was formed in the early 1980's by Mr S.Watanabe, originally a Muramatsu craftsman who left with Seuchi (Speedy) Tanaka to form their own company called Takumi. This lasted only a few years before Tanaka left to start the Altus company and Mr Watanabe formed Mateki (meaning Magic Flute). Mateki have remained a small flute factory, deliberately not mass-producing and so every flute is handmade to a high precision. They remain one the top flute makers in the world and their instruments are highly coveted. Known for their beautifully rich and full sound with mellow overtones, Mateki flutes are perfect for cross-over work as well as holding their own in any orchestral environment.

This particular flute is an earlier model (#0024) and therefore would almost certainly have been constructed by the master craftsman Mr Takeuchi and the headjoint by Mr Watanabe himself . It is pitched at 440Hz, the headjoint is the Maple cut with a 14K solid gold riser and is marked with the Watanabe signature.  The tone holes are soldered, the keywork is closed with pointed key arms and it has the offset G and C-Foot.  We have cleaned and adjusted the flute and the pads are new (Pisoni S2). Condition is superb throughout without any dents or noticeable scratches and this is a beautiful example of a high level flute and blows cleanly and full.

Here is a rare opportunity to purchase a beautiful Philipp Hammig flute. The pitch is 440HZ and the flute has had one owner who had it approximately 30 years. GEMEINHARDT SOLID STERLING SILVER PICCOLO - BEAUTIFUL CONDITION

The Gemeinhardt 4S Solid Silver piccolo is perfect for advancing students wanting a raised lip piccolo with an excellent quality of sound. The 4S is bright and responsive and warms up and holds the tuning easier than a wooden piccolo. The design and construction is excellent and this is a high quality piccolo with a sterling silver head and body with soldered tone holes, silver plated mechanism and a conical bore design,  perfect for the serious musician and the concert stage. A more advanced piccolo than the Yamaha piccolo in this price range in my opinion. The silver is brighter than the wood and the lip makes it easy to blow.

YAMAHA YFL-614 SOLID SILVER CLOSED-HOLE FLUTE WITH C-FOOT

This is a superb opportunity to acquire one of Yamaha's most sought-after models. The 614 is from Yamaha's professional range and has recently been discontinued. The head and body are solid silver throughout, the keys and mechanism are silver-plated with french pointed key arms and drawn tone-holes. A firm favourite with wind doublers and quite often mixed with a bespoke headjoint, this is a high quality professional model, made when the standard of Yamaha models was at its best.

The 614 model was made with Yamaha's new type-4 scale which has more accurately centered notes. The body is very well constructed and the mechanism light and accurate with white gold springs. It features closed-holes with offset G and split E, popular with students and those with smaller hands. This particular flute also benefits from the EC headjoint cut which features a slightly higher chimney wall (riser) and a more vertical cutaway to the lip plate. It therefore has an immediacy of sound which is crisp as well as firm and well rounded. It is easy to play and allows the player flexibility to add their own tonal colour to the sound.

Condition of this flute is superb throughout, it has had one owner, is approximately 10yrs old, the silver is in lovely condition, pads have plenty of life and it has been fully serviced ready to go. It plays very nicely and cleanly and this is a lot of flute for the money. Due to prices of Yamaha models increasing with changing exchange rates, the 600 series particularly have increased steadily in price and are one of the most sought-after advanced models in the range.

YAMAHA 471-SLGB (Ltd Edition) GOLD BRASS CLOSED-HOLE FLUTE WITH OFFSET G, SPLIT E AND C-FOOT

'PERFECT STUDENT UPGRADE'

This is a rare opportunity to acquire a Ltd edition model made by Yamaha for the Millennium. Based on the current 471 silver model, it has the same specification with open-holes, CY cut headjoint, offset G, split E and C-Foot, however the base material is made from gold brass. Yamaha´s unique expertise with the various alloys used in brass instruments led to the discovery that gold brass (brass with a higher than usual copper content) is the perfect material for optimum tone, weight, and playability. The gold brass gives a rich, colourful sound normally found in heavy wall silver or gold flutes and due to the cost of production this particular model was only produced for the Millennium and for a few years after as a special edition. This model is very hard to find and a superb purchase for a student wanting the sound of a high specification professional model without the high price tag. This flute also features a .925 solid silver lip-plate and riser and silver-plated mechanism.

The 471 is two solid steps up from the 211 student model and whilst keeping the same ease of play, offers the student a much richer quality of sound. Open holes correct hand posture and get students ready for professional models later, they offer a clearer sound with more skill options and the earlier the student gets used to playing with an open-hole flute the easier it will be.

This is a rare flute and the Yamaha 400 series is without doubt the most popular intermediate model on the market, perfect for a student coming up to grade 5 level and will easily take them through Grade 8 and on to college level.  This particular flute in superb fully overhauled condition with new pads/corks, no dents and minor marks. It comes with the Yamaha hardcase and carrycase which are in good condition although the carrycase is naturally worn being the outer protection. These models represent superb value for money and I know a previous buyer who added a pro headjoint and said that the overall tonal quality was very much like solid gold.
