Introduction

Here are some simple flute assembly instructions to ensure that every player starts out with the right habits. The flute is a delicate and precise musical instrument. Proper assembly is essential for both the instrument’s longevity and the quality of sound it produces. It is also important to clean the inside and outside of a flute after use to ensure that no moisture is left. London Flutes is the country’s leading online flute specialist and has been advising young flute players for over 20 years.

Flute Assembly:

Step 1: Connect the Headjoint to the Body

  1.  Hold the body of the flute with one hand at the top, grasping it around the area with no keys to avoid bending them.

          2.  With your other hand, gently insert the headjoint into the open end of the body, using a gentle twisting motion side to side. Repeat when disassembling.

          3.  Align the embouchure hole (hole you blow across) to line up with the centre of the keys on the body.

Step 2: Attach the Footjoint

 1.   Pick up the footjoint, holding it at the end furthest from the keys. DO NOT put your hand on the mechanism

         2.   With the other hand, hold the body at the top, near the headjoint. DO NOT GRIP KEYS.

         3.   Carefully insert the footjoint into the bottom end of the body, again using a slight twisting motion side to side. Repeat when disassembling

Step 3: Final Checks

         1.   Check that the headjoint embouchure hole (blowing hole) is in line with the keys

         2.   Check that the footjoint is slightly turned towards you so the footjoint rod is in line with body keys

Disassembly and Care Tip

  • Repeat the same steps as above but in reverse. It is important to use the twisting action to remove the head and footjoint, do not just pull these apart as they will gradually get loose.
  • Always disassemble the flute after playing to prevent moisture build-up and possible damage.
  • Use a cleaning rod and cloth to swab out moisture from each section before storing.
  • Store the flute in its case to protect it from dust and accidental knocks.

Essential Flute Care Accessories

Every flutist should keep these maintenance tools:

  • Cleaning rod

  • Microfiber cleaning cloth

  • Polishing cloth

  • Pad cleaning paper (Powder paper) – link here to Amazon to purchase

Having these items in your case makes regular maintenance quick and convenient.

Troubleshooting

  • If parts do not fit together easily, do not force them. Check for dirt or debris and clean the tenons (joining ends) gently.

Conclusion

With regular care and correct assembly, your flute will provide years of reliable use and beautiful music. Always treat your instrument gently and store it properly after each playing session.
