An intermediate flute is designed to offer a richer, more complex tone and a more responsive mechanism than a student model. This is usually achieved primarily with a change of material (Nickel to solid silver). Other changes can include a slightly more exacting headjoint cut, a move to open holes and/or an upgraded mechanism.
