STEPHEN WESSEL FLUTE No.83 – Stunning handmade flute from this bespoke maker.
Stephen Wessel retired last year and brought to the close 35 years of finely hand crafted and engineered flutes. Working from his workshop in Somerset he produced flutes that are highly sought-after and cherished by all who have owned them. The tubes are solid sterling silver with soldered tone holes and the unique, beautifully engineered keywork is stainless steel with black acrylic inserts. According to Stephen, he made the keywork from stainless steel as it was so reliable and produced an expressive power that is second to none. It also makes the flute very lightweight and has a stylish modern look.
This particular Stephen Wessel flute is No. 83 and it is pitched at 442hz with the improved Wibb scale. The condition is superb throughout with minor marks and it has been repadded ready to go. It came with an Andrew Oxley head which I am selling separately but can be added via negotiation. Stephen Wessel did not make headjoints, he worked with John Webb and produced Webb and Wessel where the head was made by Webb and the body by Wessel. Mainly though, players purchase Stephen Wessel bodies to add their own bespoke headjoint and complete the perfect flute for them.
These are incredibly hard flutes to find and rarely parted with. This came from a gentleman in France who has owned it for over 20 years and reluctantly had to sell it. I have been privileged to own two in the last 20 years myself, this being one of them. A rare find by one of the UK’s last true flute craftsmen.
