Beautiful William S. Haynes Solid Silver Alto Flute (1983) Owned by the late Ray Swinfield (serial #47291)
This beautiful Haynes solid silver alto flute is a stunning example of Haynes at its best. It was constructed in 1983, the keys are offset, the tone holes are drawn and the keys have French pointed key arms. It has a lovely rich quality of sound and has come from the estate of a very well renowned flautist, Ray Swinfield.
William S. Haynes (1864-1939) was the founder of the William S. Haynes Flute Company of Boston. The company was founded in 1888 and is one of the world’s leading makers of concert flutes. Haynes was a master silversmith. He patented his distinctive flute design in 1914 and the company has since become a provider of silver and gold instruments to many of the world’s most prominent orchestral, chamber and jazz musicians.
Ray Swinfield, who died in 2019, played with the likes of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Tony Bennett, Tom Jones, Dusty Springfield and Liza Minelli. Many Britons will know him from the 21 years of repeats of the BBC children’s television programme Mr Benn, where he played in each of the 13 episodes as well as the famous theme tune. He also played flute on The Beatles’ 1967 hit single, Penny Lane.
This is a gorgeous vintage instrument that has been cleaned, serviced and meticulously maintained. The pads are used but are not old have plenty of life in them. We have left the flute exactly as it was (apart from minor adjustment needed) when Ray last played it and it plays superbly.
I offer a 7 day trial after purchase and should the flute not be perfect for you then you can of course return for a full refund minus postage costs.
