GEBRUDER MONNIG ALTO FLUTE – Straight headjoint – in excellent condition (#16792)
Gebrüder Mönnig have been making woodwind instruments for over 100 years in Germany and their work is of the highest quality using precision handmade craftsmanship. They are based in Markneukirchen, which is the home of many famous instrument makers in Germany. This Monnig Alto Flute was made during the time of the GDR and so before 1990.
The alto flute, unlike the flute in C, is known for its mellow tone and lower notes, and it actually plays a fourth lower than the regular flute (which is half an octave). It gives a beautiful deep sound and adds depth and tone to the flute section. Another difference between the alto flute and the regular flute, is that the tube on an alto flute is thicker than that of the flute in C, and is longer too. This means the player needs more breath control, which can take practice and time to master. Alto flutes play in G and the fingering is the same primarily as a C flute playing a perfect fourth below.
This particular flute is a fine example and it is a beautifully constructed flute with very heavy silver plating. It comes with a straight head and plays beautifully and freely with a lush rich tonal quality. We have serviced the flute and the pads are used and seated well. This is a stunning handmade flute and an excellent example of handmade German quality. If you wish for new pads then this will cost an extra £250.
