Description
Rudall Carte Solid Silver Flute – Closed Holes, Offset G and C-Foot (440Hz)
(ANDREW OXLEY LIP AND RISER)
The British company Rudall Carte was among the most famous and well-regarded names in the music industry of the 19th and 20th centuries. Founded as Rudall & Rose in 1822, Richard Carte joined the firm around 1850, and the company of Rudall, Rose, Carte & Co then became Rudall Carte and Company in 1874.
Up until its acquisition by Boosey & Hawkes in 1955, Rudall Carte were producing high-quality flutes in a range of materials – cocus wood, silver, ebonite and gold. In addition, many famous names in flute history honed their trade at Rudall Carte, including Albert Cooper, Ewen McDougall and Harry Seeley (the last two of whom, along with five other Carte workers, went on to set up Flutemakers Guild).
This particular Rudall Carte solid silver flute was constructed in the mid 1960’s and tuned to 440hz. It has been completely stripped and restored by Andrew Oxley, freeing up the mechanism again, cleaning and re-oiling the internal rods, levelling the tone holes, cleaning out previously glued pads, re-shimming and replacing pads with Lucien Deluxe pads, the silver buffed and then the flute reassembled and adjusted. Andrew has also replaced the lip and riser giving this flute a new life, it now has a much more focused sound with resistance. This model also has a ‘Brosser’ key which is used for the F# and to trill onto the F#, a very popular idea for closed hole models and very easy to use with a stronger F# tone.
A beautiful handmade silver flute with a modern sound – This is a really high quality model for any advancing player. Superbly made, solid silver throughout and excellent value.
