STEPHEN WESSEL FLUTE (#9401) – Stunning handmade flute from this bespoke maker.

Stephen Wessel retired recently and brought to the close 35 years of finely hand crafted and engineered flutes. Working from his workshop in Somerset he produced flutes that are highly sought-after and cherished by all who have owned them. The Stephen Wessel flute has a solid sterling silver body with soldered tone holes. The unique and beautifully engineered keywork is stainless steel. According to Stephen, he made the keywork from stainless steel as it was so reliable and produced an expressive power. It also makes the flute very lightweight and strong and give it a stylish, modern look.

This particular model is no. 9401 and it is pitched at 442hz with the improved Wibb scale. The condition is superb throughout with minor marks and the pads are used . Stephen Wessel did not make headjoints, he worked with John Webb and produced Webb and Wessel where the head was made by Webb and the body by Wessel. Mainly though, players purchase Stephen Wessel bodies to add their own bespoke headjoint and complete the perfect flute for them.

These are incredibly hard flutes to find and rarely parted with. I have been privileged to own three in the last 20 years myself, this being one of them. A rare find by one of the UK’s last true flute craftsmen.
