Description
Philipp Hammig Silver Flute – Sinfonia (circa 1960’s) – Closed Hole with offset G, split E and C foot
Up for sale is a Philipp Hammig Sinfonia flute from the 1960’s-70’s. The Hammig family have been making woodwind instruments since the mid 1700’s and are known the world over for quality instruments. Philipp Hammig started making flutes in the 1920’s having studied with Ritterhausen and during the political upheavals in Germany the company went through a period of being state run. The Sinfonia period for the company was this period for Philipp Hammig and during this period this flute was constructed.
This particular flute was constructed in the 1960’s and looks to be of silver construction. The head is marked .900 and although the body is not, I believe that it is but cannot be 100% sure due to lack of markings so could be German silver. The keys are closed with drawn tone holes and it has the longer G# arm of that period. It has a C footjoint with C# and D# rollers (one in ebonite) and a left hand support crutch on the body. We have overhauled the flute and repadded it also and it plays very well with a lovely rounded, warm sound.
Condition is good but it has had some repairs in the past. I can see a repair to the tenon joint on the body that has been resoldered and some small dent repairs on the body. There are also scratches on some keys and on the body. None of these impact the flute and the sound as it has had a life, but it is a well made instrument by a top German maker. The case is however in poor condition and so some remedial work might be needed internally to ‘seat’ the flute better within.
Summary: A handmade flute from Hammig, one of Germany’s most known woodwind companies. Priced very reasonably in view of its age and life but overhauled and repadded to be able to pass on to a new owner. This flutes have a rounded, warm sound a lovely timbre.
